MOUNT VERNON POLICE DEPARTMENT
At approximately 8:20pm on September 22, 2009, Mount Vernon Police Officers were called to the 1200 Block of South 6th Street for reports of shots fired. Multiple calls were made.
Officers found broken glass, spent shell casings and other evidence to indicate some sort of altercation had occurred. They spoke with witnesses who said at least two people were arguing near the street. One of the individuals in the argument obtained a rifle and began firing towards the others. The remaining participants fled.
A short time after the call, a 28-year old Mount Vernon man was brought to Skagit Valley Hospital with a serious gunshot wound to the torso area. Investigators determined he was one of the individuals involved in this incident.
At least one neighboring house was struck by the fired rounds however no one other than the 28 year old man was injured.
At this point, investigators are working to piece together what occurred and determine the identity of the suspect or suspects. It has not been determined whether gang activity was associated with this incident.
