MOUNT VERNON POLICE DEPARTMENT

On Sunday, July 5, 2009, at approximately 12:46 AM, Mount Vernon Police were called to a home in the 3800 Block of East Broadway for a child not breathing and CPR was in progress. The child, 2 years of age, was transported to Skagit Valley Hospital where she later died.

Initially, it appeared the child had come down with flu like symptoms and an autopsy was scheduled for Monday, July 6, 2009.  The autopsy determined that the child had internal injuries consisting of head trauma and damage to internal organs. 

Investigators learned that the decedent had been living with relatives in Mount Vernon for less than a year.

Based on the facts observed in this investigation along with who had immediate control of the child prior to her death, a 25-year-old Mount Vernon man was taken into custody for investigation of Murder 2 degree.
