Cops Corner - May 2006Back
Mike Don
MAY 2006

With last week's return of the sun, opening of fishing season, and the upcoming end of the school year, we have officially entered vacation season.  Whether it's a weekend camping trip or a cross country trek, the following tips will help protect you and your home.

Before Leaving

  • Contact your local Police Department to see if they have a Vacation Check Program.
  • Stop all deliveries or arrange for a neighbor to pick up your mail and newspapers.
  • Ask a neighbor to watch your residence while you are away. Have them place garbage cans at the curb on your normal pickup day and return them after normal pickup is made.
  • Leave your drapes and blinds in the normal position
  • Use timers on your lights, radio, and television so they go on and off at appropriate times.
  • Don't announce your absence on your answering machine - leave a normal message.
  • Consider taking valuables to your bank safety deposit box.
  • Test your smoke and burglar alarms.

When Traveling on the Road

  • Never carry large amounts of cash - use traveler's checks or credit cards.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and never advertise your plans to strangers.
  • If you suspect someone is following you, drive to the nearest 24-hour business, police or sheriff's department, or any place where you see activity.  If you are afraid to get out of your vehicle, flash your lights and sound your horn to draw attention.
  • If your car breaks down, raise the hood.  If someone stops to help, it is advisable that you stay in your vehicle and ask them to call the police and/or a mechanic to assist you.
  • Don't stop to offer help to a stranded motorist.  Go to the nearest telephone and call for assistance.  Don't assume somebody else has already done so.
  • Always lock your vehicle doors and park in a well lit area.
  • Lock all valuables in the trunk and always carry your wallet, checkbook, and purse with you.

When Saying at a Motel or Hotel

  • Never leave money, checks, credit cards, car keys, or valuables in the room.  Always take them with you or place them in the hotel safe.
  • Determine the most direct route to and from your room.  Know where the fire escapes, elevators, and nearest telephones are located.
  • Lock the doors when in your room.
  • Report any suspicious movements in the corridors or rooms to management immediately.  Don't wait for somebody else to do it.
  • If you are staying in a motel and are unfamiliar with the area, ask the clerk if there are any areas you should avoid.
  • Select your tour guides carefully.

Camping

  • Avoid camping alone in isolated areas.
  • Park you vehicle so it cannot be blocked in case of an emergency.
  • Mark your tent, sleeping bags, and clothing items with indelible ink.
  • Familiarize yourself with pay phone locations and/or emergency stations in case of an accident or crime.
  • Get to know your neighbors at the campsite and help protect each other's belongings.
  • Avoid walking alone.
  • Report any suspicious activities and all crimes to the proper authorities.

We wish you a safe, enjoyable vacation and a wonderful summer.
